Candle: I'm Gaming Again

Some may not believe it, and it's kind of hard to believe myself, but it is in fact true.  After settling into parenthood and the routines and little free time that come along with it, I have finally put an end to my long-running, not-entirely-on-purpose...
...run of not playing any games.  After moving all three (four, if you count the FC-Twin) of our gaming systems to the bedroom TV, I have spent more time gaming in the past week than I have in the past two or three months.

And it's great.  My wife and I are playing a lot of New Super Mario Bros: Wii, and I've actually thrown Prey back into the Xbox 360 and am quite enjoying taking another run at it.  The last thing I need to do is run one of my 75-foot ethernet cables from the router in the basement, on the northwest end of the house, down to the laundry room, up through the floor, across the hallway and into the bedroom on the southeast end of the house so I can (maybe) get on Xbox Live, or at least spend some of the points I got for Christmas from John.

So that's it, a little flame for myself actually gaming again.  And it feels good.

I only make a point about running the Ethernet cable because for everything I think Microsoft has done correctly this generation, there's one thing I believe to be a glaring omission from all Xbox 360 hardware models: Wireless Internet built in.

I do have an old Original Xbox wifi adapter that John gave me several years ago, but it's on the fritz and doesn't play nice anymore. In my basement, I already ran one piece of 75-foot Ethernet cable from my router, through the ceiling and even through a wall so it comes out of a nice wallplate, but it's something I shouldn't have to do.

If Microsoft is pushing Live so hard, they should take the final step and just make it easier for people to get online without either buying one of their ridiculously overpriced wifi adapters or running cable through their house.

Heck, the Wii of all things has wifi built in, and most of us are still trying to figure out why...

We have a section of Cat-5 cable running along the baseboard in our living room to go from the router to the Xbox. I can't understand how the Wii has built-in wireless, but the 360 doesn't.

Finally ran the Cat-5 yesterday afternoon and am now back online. In fact, you may see that I've finally accepted your friend request, Simon.

It was cool just to hook up the 360 to the internet again. I got to see who was online and what they were doing. We checked out everybody's avatars and tried to redo mine to look like Noah. It didn't work so well. The 360's avatar creation isn't quite as capable as the Wii's when it comes to creating non-traditional human body shapes. It's hard to create a "baby" avatar when you can only go so short, plus they didn't have any onesies in the clothing area...
